This WWII novel of Japanese-American honor and patriotism begins on March 30, 1942 when more than 250 Japanese-Americans living on Bainbridge Island, in Puget Sound, Washington, are being evacuated. The process goes quite smoothly until the Army discovers that a 21-year old Japanese-American fisherman, Matthew Kobata, is missing. During their search for Matthew, two Caucasian men are found murdered on the island.

Seattle detective Elroy Johnstone has come to the island to investigate the murders, and evidence is leading him to suspect Matthew may be involved. But he is one step behind as Matthew escapes on his fishing boat. With Matthew now emerging as the prime suspect in the murders, the detective’s investigation then takes him to Seattle where another murder has occurred. This time a Japanese-American.

Complicating matters, the coroner finds that both the Japanese-American and one of the Caucasian men have identical tattoos, both on the left ankle. But what do these tattoos mean? And who has killed these three men? Matthew? And if so, why? And most important, where is Matthew?

Johnstone’s investigation will take him from Seattle’s Naval Air Station to the Manzanar Relocation Center in Owens Valley, California, and back to Bainbridge Island. And, although he doesn’t know it, the clock is ticking and a countdown is in place for an event that could result in the unthinkable taking place Toward Night’s End.

M.H. Sargent is also the author of the CIA thriller MP-5 series Seven Days From Sunday, The Shot To Die For, Operation Spider Web, The Yemen Connection and Alliance of Evil.

Toward Night End edition by MH Sargent Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Toward Night's End is one of those novels that is so well-written that it is hard to believe it was (and is as of this writing) available FREE. It would be a bargain at its list price of $2.99, and I'd have happily forked over for a hardbound version if that had been my only choice.

The novel, based on a true story, is set in the months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and around the forced internment of Japanese immigrants and their Japanese-American children and grandchildren, centering on the family of Matthew Kobata, who disappears in the hours before his family was ordered to leave their home on a Washington island and report for internment at Manzanar War Relocation Center in California.

My beautiful mother-in-law and her family was interred, forced from their home in Stockton, CA, and interred, eventually, in Arkansas, and her experience -- and the experience of my aunts-by-marriage -- piqued my interest in this novel, as much, if not more, than my enjoyment of mysteries.

Toward Night's End is at once a work of literary fiction, a mystery, and a World War II novel. It's beautifully written, and beautifully told, dwelling on the love of country both of those who chose to be Americans and those whose families have been Americans for more than two generations, as well as the betrayal of country.

Toward Night End edition by MH Sargent Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This is a well written, and historically interesting novel. Though it takes place during the initial days of the Japanese-American internment at the outset of World War Two, it's not really about that. This is a classic murder mystery--dead bodies, hard driving detective, etc.--that weaves through the families of the Japanese-Americans being forced to leave their homes for the duration of the war. The characters are believable, the dialogue crisp and realistic, and the plot compelling. There were unanswered questions and parts that weren't explained fully. I didn't buy the part where the main character is allowed to join the crew of a Navy warship without any training, boot camp, or records. That just wouldn't happen. I didn't understand the Japanese plan in coming to the island. The B-17 factory is mentioned, but B-17s at that time were not bombing Japan, they were bombing Europe. And why would the Japanese want to bomb Seattle? Lots of things didn't quite make sense. Also, I never did understand the title. Having said all that, I did enjoy the book and recommend it as an enjoyable read for fans of detective fiction, especially if you are a fan of books set during the war years.
A strong mystery, rich in the atmosphere of the times. The writer brilliantly uses the plight of Japanese American internment as a starting point for his narrative and as a recurring theme throughout. The anxious tone is captured early and never forgotten. The multiple points of view work well; careful crafting paints real individuality into each character. I highly recommend.
If one likes a mystery and historical fiction, this is the book for you. M. H Sargent's "Toward Night's End" is a well written mystery, with likable characters, an historically engaging story line, and well developed setting and local color. "Toward Night's End" is a complex story of murder, sedition and the internment of the more than 250 Japanese-Americans living on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, Washington, in 1942. The greed, fear, prejudice of the government ordered internment of the Japanese-Americans is revealed through the characterization, and especially as we follow the Kobata family's trials. However, the book is not really about that; "Toward Night's End" is a murder mystery. It is a complex mystery that keeps you guessing as Sargent gives the reader piece after piece of puzzle without revealing too much until we get to the end. Thus, if you enjoy historical fiction and a good mystery, I strongly recommend this book to you.

The story takes place in 1942 during the relocation and internment of the more than 250 Japanese-Americans living on Bainbridge Island. The American Army lead relocation goes quite smoothly, until the Army discovers that one "Jap" is missing (therefore, he must be a spy). 21-year old Matthew Kobata, a fisherman, did not show up for the ferry. During their search for him, two murdered, Caucasian men are discovered on the island. Seattle detective Elroy Johnstone investigates the murders, and evidence begins to mount against Matthew. Pressure builds as this murderer - this spy - must be caught; meanwhile, time is passing - moment by moment - approaching the novels' climactic event "Toward Night's End."

The title "Toward Night's End" holds multiple meanings, but I will leave that for each person to interpret. The plot was developed around the historical Japanese-American internment, which does become a sub-plot of the story. From this situation, fear and prejudice surfaces from both groups, which Sargent develops a moralistic theme for us to consider. The characters are well developed, and we care about them. Matthew, the protagonist, Johnstone, the Seattle police detective, and the Kobata family were especially well developed, and one could not help but become concerned about them as the story progressed. A well written book, and I will look for more books by this author.
I've read some of Mr. Sargent's books and told him then I thought he was at least as good as the best of the writers out there. But this book was way past anything I've read by Clancy, Patterson, or any others. The writer has improved from t he original thrillers with one of the finest mystery novels of my experience. I only read about 200 books a year so am probably underestimating the other writers out there, but this book captured me from the beginning and never let go. It was a particularly revealing picture of what America did to its citizens during WW-II and the aftermath of those same situations.

If we ever do anything like that again I would hope that our memories would be jogged strongly by an expose such as this. And not to mention the extraordinary murder mystery that went with it. Thank you for a wonderful read and a testament to folks that you better read these books while you can at these prices. He is going to start getting expensive with this type of work.
