This is a beautifully illustrated book of Joshua Slocum's epic solo journey around the world, however, the notes by Thomas Philbrick in the Penguin Classics version should have been included. They make the story and its characters much more accessible for the modern reader. One of my favorite historical travel books...along with "Voyage of the Paper Canoe" by Nathaniel Bishop.Product details

sailing alone around the world edition by joshua slocum Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Loved the description of captain Slocum's arrival when entering savage territory. Who would have ever thought of carpenter tags to fend off intruders. Would have loved to see more detailed maps of harbors. Recommend this book to anyone wanting to take on a journey around the world. Unbelievable to think one man can actually manage all the sails during a storm. It should be mentioned in Ripley's "Believe it or not".
The condition of the book and the speed at which it was shipped were mind-boggling in a society of over-promised and under-delivered products. Its a classic piece I want for my permanent library and now that it's here, I can recycle the other copy I had. The content is amazing. The story compelling. The truth universal. Read this.
I'm not even a sailor and I found this very interesting. I love the maps etc., that makes it more than just a story...it's a part of history
It is difficult to image the rigors Slocum went through when he made his epic voyage over 110 years ago. Those were the days when seamen were seamen, resourceful, brave, adventurous, tough. Sure we have very capable modern day seamen and women with those attributes but these days it's GPS, radio, Internet access, satellite phones, satellite based weather reports of upcoming storms...none of that in Slocum's days. No wild natives these days as Slocum encountered in the channels around Cape Horn. He was the first man to sail solo around the world and what a story it is. Great read although his style is a bit rough. Recommended reading.
Anyone who has ever dreamed of travel and adventure should read this book. Written by a clipper ship captain with a fifth grade education, the prose is lyrical. It is a book everyone should read.
This is a classic story, so entertainingly written by Captain Slocum himself of as heroic an accomplishment as Sir Edmund Hillory's first assent of Mt. Everest or Captain Bird's first conquest of the South Pole. Even more so as Captain Slocum accomplished his task completely alone. I reread this book every few years and each time I do so I appreciate it more. I buy this book for friends! I heartily recommend it.
I own a version of this book which was published in 1956, and wanted to order a copy for a friend. I would be embarrassed to give this as a gift. It looks like a proof-readers copy of a book before it is issued for publication. Chapter headings appear in the middle of pages between text (and are written twice), and there are none of the sketches contained in my earlier version of the book. The type setting and book layout are as bland as a Word document you might write for a report at work. The complete story is here, but the presentation leaves much to be desired.
This is a beautifully illustrated book of Joshua Slocum's epic solo journey around the world, however, the notes by Thomas Philbrick in the Penguin Classics version should have been included.
